Cave Destinations
That's according to Treehugger.com, formerly Mother Nature Network:
"This cave, once inhabited by ancient Mayan civilizations and used as a burial place, is also an important archeological site. It is this unique history and Barton's amazing rock formations that make it one of the more interesting of all of Central America’s underground attractions...Tour companies offer guided canoe cruises through the cave. Truly adventurous travelers can swim in the cave's waters. The unusual nature of these underground waterways makes Barton an attractive caving option, but it is the cave's spectacular domed chambers that earn it a place alongside the world's best cave destinations."

The Barton Creek Cave, a cathedral-like wet cave discovered by Peace Corps volunteers in 1970, is located on the Bogaert family farm and is one of the most popular tour destinations in the Cayo District of Belize. It is one of the longest subterranean sites in Belize. Surveying completed in 2002 and 2005 charted at least 5 miles of cave passages, with an additional 4-5 miles yet to be mapped.
Once a Mayan ceremonial cave, aside from pottery shards, jewelry, and other relics, the remains of at least 28 individuals ranging from children to adults were found on the ten natural ledges along the river, all within the first kilometer inside the cave.
As you glide through the cave in a 2-man canoe, you’ll experience the breathtaking, live mineral formations. Listed as #3 in a list of “9 of the World's Most Unusual Cave Destinations,” [https://www.treehugger.com/worlds-most-beautiful-and-unusual-cave-destinations-4862951] by Treehugger.com (formerly the highly regarded Mother Nature Network) Barton Creek Cave it is an amazing experience that everyone - young and mature – will remember forever.
